WIRED Retail - What's the future of AR in Retail?

skignz were in London this week to start a busy week of events and speak at the prestigious WIRED Retail Conference 2015.

Co-Founder & CMO of skignz, Si Brown was asked to speak about 'What's the future of Augmented Reality in Retail" at the event and gladly accepted.

The Event was attended by all sorts of retail brands, from supermarket chains and Global Tech Agencies to E-Commerce Platforms and Global Retailers, and was held at the beautiful St. Pancras Hotel.

Steeped in History and standing aside the famous Train Station, the hotel was an excellent place for skignz to showcase our technology.

Si gave a rousing speech, talking to attendees about the different uses of skignz, and how it could be integrated into the future of retail.

Attendees furiously made notes as Si went through the capabilities of AR technology, beyond using it as a gimmick or marketing tool with a range of interesting yet practical/useful ways in which AR can have a huge impact on retail, then ending his presentation with a 'Live Demo' to wow the crowd!

“It’s always nice to be asked to speak at events, but the organisation and professionalism of the WIRED Events is well known, so I couldn’t refuse” Said Si.

Si actually got to sit on the stairs made famous probably for many famous people walking up and down them over the years but more recently the 1990's Girls Group, the Spice Girls filmed their debut Music Video for Wannabe on these very stairs... Ziga Ziga Ziga Zig Ahhh

He went on to say: “The Interest in skignz throughout the day was superb, we couldn’t of asked for a better response really.  Also, it’s always really powerful to show people the skignz technology in action, so to get through the live demo without a hitch was great news!”

Head of DV Partnerships, Jamie Clarke, was also in attendance and supporting the preparation for the speech.

He said “The attendees were encapsulated by Si’s speech, and spent an awful lot of time afterwards, at our event stand, understanding our tech and talking through some ideas.  It was a really productive day for skignz

WebSummit Dublin 2015 - A Reflection on our experience

It's been 10 days now since we returned home after WedSummit in Dublin, Ireland.

We certainly needed some of that time to recover, but we have used the last few days to reflect an our whole experience from both skignz being at a big exhibition/conference as an 'Alpha Company', through to what we felt was good & bad from an event point of view?

Let's get the bad out of the way and focus on the positives. These are only really nitty gritty things that we felt that we would like to change:

#1. We only had our 'Alpha Stand' for one day, we would have preferred at least two days. WebSummit is now that big with over 42k people attending that after we had the stand on the first day, we didn't really have a base or somewhere we can direct people to to come and talk to us.

#2. the opportunities to meet the investors was limited as they chose who they wanted to see and only one of the ones we saw was worth the meeting.

Most of the success we had meeting VC's was at other events and through introductions from our own bank and other contacts.

#3. Using the chat on the app was great prior to the event but once the event started, many people weren't replying in time, setting up meetings became difficult due to clashes and delays, "if only there was a way to identify them and would alert you when you were close, so at least you can say hello and put a face to a name (If only hey ;-))."

Like we said above the above are nitty gritty stuff, that can be taken on board by WebSummit as they progress, as all feedback is good even if it's a little bit uncomfortable at the time, but as a growing brand and organisation, listening to your customers is key to your future success.

Positives... for this we maybe have too many to mention but feel it was not only the opportunity that WebSummit presents, the types of people attending and the quality of your offering. for us though what was key was the dynamic of the team we took with us, the approach as in early mornings and late nights.

Engaging people during the day, with either preset meetings, chatting to the next table over lunch or mixing with Many different people during the 'Night Summits and Pub Crawls'.

David Murphy (Head of Sports Partnerships at skignz) thought the Pub Crawl on the first night was excellent for him personally, as the four of us were broken up into different places, making us engage people and not just go to the opening event as a group.

By the time we all met up afterwards, we already had a number of different people to speak to, interested parties for partnerships and an overwhelming positive response to skignz itself.

He said after the second day that the night before was fantastic as it helped him find his feet with regards to explaining skignz and how it could work in a multitude of scenarios, so much so that on the Tuesday, he felt he went straight in, was quick and efficient with his explanation and demonstration of skignz to everyone who he spoke to, as well as finding ways to relate to each of them personally.

This continued for the next 3 days for all of us. We have met some wonderful people from all corners of the earth, some we may not do business with but will certainly stay in contact with as we are sure we can help each others companies going forward, even if we may not do business with each other.

The key for us was that we never spoke to anyone who did not see either a fit for skignz with them professionally or personally. Not many startups or tech companies can say that. This is actually the overall response we get from anyone who sees skignz for the first time.

From us placing skignz all over Dublin to help everyone at WebSummit find their hotels, the venues, even the toilets, refreshments and various stages; right through to the partner bars for the 'Pub Crawl's and Night Summits' to places of interest.

The corridor of sponsor skignz ran from the train and taxi ranks right to the main gate of the RDS. But only those who knew about skignz, had the app could see this information.

We spoke to a number of people who actually worked for WebSummit and fed back what we were constantly hearing - "Why isn't this part of the Web Summit offering? If we all had skignz it would be easier to find people after using chat".

Lets hope the connections we have made and discussions held throughout WebSummit and hopefully in the coming weeks, can make this a reality not only for next year's WebSummit in Lisbon, Portugal, but also for the other events they organise such as RISE, COLLISION & ONE.

We will obviously update you on our progress and also the other similar tech events across the globe who have approached us to work with them.

Who knows, within the next 12-18 months every major tech/brand/mobile event like WebSummit you attend, will be 'skignzed up' for your convenience and even further enhance your overall experience.

In summary we had a very positive experience with WebSummit but it's like anything, you get out of it what you put into it.

Plan, Plan and Plan some more, have a very clear idea of what you aim to achieve and what is required, and execute your plan....

Winning at Old Trafford - Can you improve on that?

“That’s Boro out”…

The first words my 14 year old M.F.C. mad son said, as the draw for the fourth round of the Capital One League Cup was made.

Manchester United v Middlesbrough, at Old Trafford, the Theatre of Dreams…

I had to think hard about whether or not to buy tickets to the game.  The shiver of disappointment from the Play Off Final at Wembley last may still ran down the spine. Then, we learned that there would be up to 11,000 fans travelling.. Oh go on then, one last time….

As 'Head of Data Visualisation Partnerships' at skignz, I couldn’t resist thinking about the possibility of a showcase of skignz at Old Trafford, and how we could maybe make at least one part of the game memorable for my son!

After speaking with Si, the Co-Founder & CMO of skignz, he came up with the plan that we would use skignz to show my son and his friend to their seats, and allow other skignz users to see where they were.

Great Idea! Over 70,000 people in the ground and any one of them would be able to pick us out using skignz.  We also decided to place skignz around Old Trafford for the away fans, guiding them to the correct areas of the ground, and making life easier for them.

Inside the stadium there was an electric feel to the atmosphere as we made our way to our seats, 11,000 Teessiders (me, my son and his friend amongst them) ready to roar on our hometown club to victory in the biggest club stadium in the land.

My son opened the skignz app on his smart phone….
"Have you seen that!!” he said.

He’d just seen the skignz above his seat.  Then he saw another, and others dotted around Old Trafford there were skignz showing supporters clubs, people, and also support for the plight of the Steel Industry on Teesside #SaveOurSteel.

Middlesbrough F.C. won on penalties against a strong Manchester United team with England Captain Wayne Rooney missing his penalty.

A result that will live long in the memory of Boro fans.  The next day, I asked my now very tired son what he thought of Old Trafford and the trip.

“I loved it dad. We won and I had my own skignz above my seat..
I wonder if LVG (Louis Van Gaal, M.U.F.C. Manager) saw it?”

I’m not sure about that son, but I’m sure he will soon….

If you want to use skignz at your club or on away days, place your own skignz beforehand and it will not only can help you find the 'Away End' at any stadium in the world but will also help you find your friends in the crowds if you link with them.

You can find out all the latest from skignz on both this blog and our usual social media channels

Wired Retail Conference in London

skignz Co-Founder and CMO will be speaking at the upcoming WIRED Retail Conference in London.

Si was invited to speak after a number of the 'WIRED' events team saw him present and pitch at various events and the articles written about skignz in 'WIRED Magazine' throughout 2015

Si will be focussing on the future of retail and how this will evolve, change and progress using Augmented Reality.

skignz already has a few innovative and unique ways in which AR can be incorporated into retail, but instead of looking in store as many other brands have done with AR or activating content through brands publications.

"What about GeoLocation?"

"What about lead generation?"

"How about relating hyperlocal information to drive and increase purchases?"

Some of the areas in which Si feels further exploration are:
 - AR driving sales
 - AR helping with emotive purchases
 - AR increasing speed of purchases

Web Summit 2015 - skignz is Alpha Class

skignz is delight to be chosen as one of the 'Alpha Companies' for the up coming Web Summit in Dublin.

The Summit has grown from 400 attendees to over 30,000 from 110 different countries in 4 years and is seen as the premier events for the global tech industry.

Especially for Start-up's as the world's leading VC's (Venture Capitalists) come from all corners of the planet to check out the latest talent and look for the next 'big thing' or as they say in the tech industry the next big 'unicorn'.

skignz will take their place as one of the select Alpha companies. Last year Alpha companies raised over $1billion in investment capital within 9 months.

uber raise over $24m in a pub in Temple Bar 4 years ago! So we are sure you will agree; this seems to be the right place for companies like skignz to showcase our technology to a very specific audience, representing the most successful VC's, tech companies and brands from across the world.

As an Alpha company this allows skignz the opportunity to showcase their tech to the whole audience with a dedicated 'skignz stand T158' on the Tuesday 3rd November 2015.

skignz is looking to meet with interested parties around partnerships, Joint Ventures and future investment with a number of meetings already in place for each of these key focus areas.

The skignz team will include both founders, our new 'Strategic Board Advisor' and the recently appointed Head of Sports and Head of DV (Data Visualisation) Partnerships. The team have been preparing for over 2 months and are really looking forward to going.

We will be updating all of our social media channels on a regular basis as we have decided to use all the key locations (relating to Web Summit) across Dublin as the 'live demo' of skignz for all 30,000+ attendees.

Anyone attending should download the FREE skignz app on either IOS or Android so you don't miss out.

We will be announcing closer to the Web Summit a competition that will certainly capture people's imagination and engage everyone in a new and unique way, ultimately enhancing their overall visit to the Web Summit.

We have already been featured on the Web Summit blog, here are the links to the articles:

Pepsi Max's version of skignz

Today we received links to the following video from an overwhelming amount of people...

What do you think? Fun yes, Interesting use of drones yes, visual and engaging yes!

Here are a selection of the comments that were sent to us along with the link:

"they've stolen your idea"
"but you can do all that and more with skignz"
"it's not very inclusive as only a few people can use it at once"
"looks very expensive to implement"
"how is skignz different?"
"we hear a lot about drones for Amazon etc."
"where does this leave skignz?"
"how do you feel about this?"
"drones have been around since the 1940's - so what?"
"looks expensive to deliver"
"who actually controls the drones? drone pilots or through the app?"
"imagine if everyone tried to call the drone at once"
"what happens if it crashes in the crowd - ouch, wouldn't want to be underneath it then!"

The following conversations again seemed to raise more questions than answers, but one core element was people wanted to know where this left skignz and what did we think of it?

Well we think it's AWESOME! Way to go Pepsi Max for risking their reputation to create such an experience, linking mobile devices with drones and then applying it to a crowded festival/concert.

It actually proved that there is the need to find your friends, there is a need to find places like the toilets, the bar, exits etc. something skignz has been advocating for the last few years!

So we at skignz are really happy that Pepsi Max have done this and it looks like the 5 million plus people who have viewed the video on YouTube think it's innovative, interesting and the overall concept is very cool.

Where does this leave skignz?
Exactly where we were before this was launched, however now more than 5 million people have been exposed to the possibilities of this type of experience being created around you at live events such as festivals and concerts.

How does it compare to skignz?
Without knowing the ins and outs of how Pepsi Max provided this installation at this year's 'New Look Wireless 2015', the very glossy/well edited video to promote it and no doubt all delivered and filmed at the one location.

Also how many different drones they used? Then compare this to the amount of people who attended 'New Look Wireless 2015'skignz can be used by EVERYONE in attendance and is personalised to them, so they only see what they want? When they want it? Where it's relevant to them!

One other key element we feel they got right, was the interaction with varying locations & mobile devices. The big issue we see, is the amount of people who can access this type 'brand experience' at the same time and is it only relevant at that one location.

We thank everyone who took the time to send us the link, comment on it, compared it with skignz and asked what we thought?

skignz is not just a one time installation, a brand gimmick, a fad to be used in isolation.

It's considerate of the environment and does not require anything further to access than the mobile device the majority of people carry with them day in day out. Plus it can be used anywhere on the planet, 24/7, 365 days per year!

skignz was developed to be a technology platform that allows the users who download it, to take it everywhere they go, use it when they want and with whom they want, personalise it, shape it to their needs, from finding your tent at a festival, your friends at a concert or even your car in a supermarket carpark, a first time meeting for work or even a date?

In summary we applaud what Pepsi Max has done and the way they did it, however we feel they have only further highlighted a range of needs of current society, put the spotlight on a few core issues people face in certain circumstances like live events and demonstrate that although '5 Million People' are interested in what they did, their solution was not quite what it should be!

After reading this short summary and watching the video, do you think skignz is the right solution?

If you would like to download skignz then please visit www.skignz.com/downloads or the Apple App Store/GooglePlay.

You can follow us on all the major social media channels, even contribute using the skignz 'capture function' and sharing the pics on your own social media channels. We look forward to see what you are 'skignzing'

Former Premier League Footballer David Murphy joins skignz

We are delighted to say that David Murphy has now joined skignz as our 'Head of Sports Partnerships'.

The former Premier League Professional Footballer with Middlesbrough, Hibernian, Motherwell and England Under 19, recently retired from the professional game through a serious knee injury in 2014.

Still in his early thirties, David is looking forward to the next stage of his life with his wife and young family after relocating back up to the Teesside area.

With a number of other business interests outside of football. He is staying involved in the game and working as part of MFC Manager Aitor Karanka's back room team at Middlesbrough, scouting players and providing match analysis. Going full circle in his career and returning to the club where he joined their academy as a schoolboy.

Over the last 6-12 months David has been informally working with the skignz team, helping provide insight into the world of professional sport and where he felt skignz could become involved. This relationship has now been firmed up with David joining us as 'Head of Sports Partnerships'.

Si Brown (skignz Co-Founder & CMO) said:
"In this role David will be engaging with his extensive network of contacts not only in Football but also in the wider world of professional sports to see where 'skignz may fit'.

Some areas of consideration are obvious especially around the 'supporters experience'. However by going behind the scenes at professional clubs, can the skignz tech help enhance performance, provide data and information that currently is not being captured or even present current information in a more visual way?"

One of the very few players to win silverware in both England and Scotland, David won the league cup in both countries.
