Social media and technology now compared to the past is an important part of almost everyone’s lives. 

No matter how young or old you are you will have some form of social media in your life. The majority of this is all done through your mobile device. 

Now we all know that it is important almost essential to have a mobile device for calls and texts and to get in touch with everyone now and then but we don't need it all the time for everything. 

We have become that attached to it that it feels like we have literally lost a limb when we lose our phone. We feel like we cannot do anything or get in touch with anyone. That’s how much it has made an impact on our lives.

But think of how much you are missing out on in the world when you have your head down constantly on your mobile keeping yourself to yourself and not interacting socially. Thought about it?

What did people do years ago? There was no mobile phones and technology like there is today. People had to communicate and find out information in different ways. 

They had to either write letters to each other, telecommunicate even pigeon letters at some point (although that’s going back quite a while now). However my point is that even though we have all of this amazing new technology we don't have to miss out on the world. 

Technology is developed and getting developed currently now that allows you to see the world and not miss out on opportunities and being personally social while using your mobile device. 

Consider just how many important things happen in your life daily, monthly and yearly. Yet half of those you will miss the opportunity of experiencing them fully because you relied on your mobile device to assist you and social media. 

That isn't what you want. You may think at the time you are experiencing everything fully however you are not, your mobile is. Such as going for jobs. You will be searching for them ‘looking down’ on your mobile device a lot of the time, when really an opportunity could be straight in front of your eyes if you only just 'looked up'. 

You may walk past that job advert sign or that person that could be looking for someone currently as you relied on your mobile phone to help you find a job.

Think about when you are travelling. A lot of people travel each year, over 1 Billion. When you go travelling you want to have fun and experience the place while you are there. 

You like to take interest in what you do and what you see. 

So what do you do? 

You take a photo or video on your mobile phone. Then what… you upload it to some form of social media site. You're not really enjoying the full experience for yourself. Yes it is nice to take a photo and upload it to social media for others to see, but not all the time and not just the point of going travelling. It is your interest, so make it your interest, don’t just do it for likes and to be seen as popular.

Progression of Google Glass

Google glass was developed by Google in the Project Glass research and development project to produce a mass-market ubiquitous computer. It is a small stamp sized screen attached to a pair of eyeglass frames. When Google Glass first started out, it was not generally a new idea for head-worn augmented reality displays, however now it was backed by Google It had drawn attention from the media to the design that they had created for it.

Let’s take a look at the progression they have made within the previous year. In 2011 it weighed around roughly 8 pounds but now from future creation and amendments it weighs just as light as a pair of regular glasses.

Google Glass or the use of Geo located AR content?

Due to the creation and popularity of the Google Glass and what it can do, advancements have come to what they can do to make it more adjustable for the public and to put their own style to the Glass.

In early 2013 Google were working on models that can be used with prescription lenses. The models were to be available to testers just before the end of 2013. Now earlier this year they created and launched their Titanium collection.

They created and offered 40 different combinations of frames, shades and colours for users to customise their eyewear with. But this was not enough for them.

Providing a wider and more appealing range is key

Google Glass had become so popular and creative within the market that they wanted to do more. From this they created a partnership with Luxottica to help them provide a much wider range of styles to their Glass rather than their current slightly ‘dorky’ form.

Other brands want to be in with Google Glass and become part of its major progression. Luxottica have two major brands that they have made part of the deal; Ray Ban and Oakley. They stated that ‘they believe that a strategic partnership with a leading player like Google is the ideal platform for developing a new way forward in their industry and answering the evolving needs of consumers on a global scale’.

Through creating a deal with Google Glass, brands can get on board with what people may say if the next big shift in technology.

The progression that Google Glass has made is remarkable within the market and they most likely are to keep on progressing as more people will want to get on board with this piece of technology.

University campuses are changing every day. With the constant updates in technology it is essential that Universities make sure they adapt to that change to meet every need of their students and provide them with the best experience and education available.

skignz provides a new way for 'EVERYONE' to navigate about. It doesn’t just have a certain place it can be used or a certain audience that can use it, it is for everyone. You no longer need to be lost. You no longer need to feel alone. You can now prepare and know where you are at all times. Plus it is not boring like looking and trying to read or understand a map. It is simply straight there on your device. It is always with you wherever you are. No need to go in search of a map or some form of location help.

Whats in it for you? The social side of skignz!

And there's more ... skignz is not just for navigating. It has a whole social side to it beyond University campus. It is the social element of taking skignz into other parts of your life. 

You can use it when you go shopping. Say you fancied going shopping in a new place you hadn’t been before, you can set up skignz before you go and easily locate the shops and where you need to be when you arrive. 

It saves you time from looking around and wasting valuable time what can be used to shop. You can find your car in a very busy car park. Most of us forget from time to time where we have parked, so simply set up a skignz above your car for when you having finished where you need to be and find where you have parked you will be able to see it through skignz on your mobile device. It can also be used when you are at concerts or festivals with your friends. 

Getting lost from your friends or group is very easy: going to the bar or to the toilet - how will you be sure to find them again in that huge crowd? Therefore when you arrive you will each already have skignz set up, so if you go to the bar and lose your friends, just load up skignz on your mobile, scan the crowd and there you will see a little sign just above your friend's head informing you of where they are.

skignz really is the next big thing. It has a lot of benefits for people who use it and can be used in any way you wish.

So what does skignz mean to student experience?

It provides new students who are coming to University a way to feel comforted and reassured that they are going to know where they are going when they arrive on campus. Everything will already be set up for them putting them at ease and giving them time to get used to the app. It is also available for them to download before they come to University prior to them receiving the offer letter.

They can also find it to find new friends. Such as students who may not be very good at making new friends, they can use it in a social way to talk to new people. They could set up a skignz for themselves to inform people that they are new, what course they are on or if anyone else is doing the same, going to the same lesson as them and so on. 

It provides a new way for them to interact with other students if they do not feel they are best at doing that.

It can help foreign students also who have mentioned to us that when they arrive on campus they are generally alone. This way they will be able to find each other and a new way to make friends who they feel comfortable with. It is not always easy for foreign students to make new friends as they have said before to the university.

Party Time with skignz at TU Students Union

skignz also provides students with excitement when they come to University. They can use skignz not only to find new friends but for nights out or if they wanted to interact with others to have some fun. 

It provides value in their learning ability as it will put them at ease to find other students who they can relate to and also to have some friends and fun for the nights out in the Student Union and around town. 

For example: if they were having a house party for new students then they could place a skignz above their house to let people know that’s where the party is or even to try a few places with new friends. If they were to go for food and a few drinks they could each set up skignz on their phone, plan out where they wish to go and then each find where they need to be.
